ART TODAY 021618 Artistry Commissions by Synthia SAINT JAMES

In 2015, AARP’s “Portraits of Community” launched in Los Angeles. It represented a visual representation of how communities, its roadways, and social interactions would be better structured in a way that benefit people of all ages and across generations.

AARP asked, “What would make Los Angeles an even better place to live?” They provided online portals and installed listening posts, including large writing surfaces stocked with markers and pens in South Los Angeles. The communities responded with answers that ranged from affordable housing, to safe parks, reliable transit and intergenerational connectivity.

Synthia SAINT JAMES is one of the artists commissioned to use her unique talents to draw insights from the public responses that formed a true snapshot of the intersection between the existing beauty of our communities and the endless possibilities of how we can make them even better. The project, featured on Metro buses, the Metro Gold Line train, and Metro bus shelters around the city, was a beautiful vibrant success!

Synthia SAINT JAMES’ art and celebrity have been utilized in numerous promotional campaigns for such companies as Royal Caribbean International, Johnson & Johnson’s Ambi, Liberty Mutual, Seagram’s, Union Bank of California, Washington Mutual Bank, Maybelline, Kayser-Roth, Coca Cola USA, Essence Communications, Barnes and Noble, and AARP (a painting design for a Metro Rail Train).

SAINT JAMES’ United States postal stamp designs include the first Kwanzaa Commemorative Stamp in 1997 (a total of 318 million stamps was printed using her first design), and the 2016 Forever Kwanzaa Stamp celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Kwanzaa holiday.

Her artwork in hospitals includes commissioned originals for Glendale Memorial Hospital, Glendale, CA and Sisters of Providence, Seattle, WA, and fine art reproductions that grace the walls of such hospitals as Kaiser Permanente, Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, Glendale Adventist Medical Center, City of Hope Medical Center and Bridgeport Hospital.

SAINT JAMES’ architectural designs include a 2’8”x150 foot mural design for Ontario International Airport International Baggage Claim, Ontario, CA, six 6×9 foot elevator lobby door designs for California’s East End Complex, Sacramento, CA, three 45×22” stained glass windows for the West Tampa Library, Tampa, FL, and a 4×7 foot ceramic tile mural for Cowan Elementary School, Westchester, CA.

United States Ambassadors have requested that the art of Synthia SAINT JAMES be included in the interior design of their embassies through the Art in Embassies Program since 1991. A partial listing of the embassies includes Caracas, Venezuela, Gagnoa, Ghana, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, Abuja, Nigeria, The Republic of the Congo Brazzaville, Asmara, Eritrea, Singapore, Lome,Togo, Valleta, Malta and Juba, South Sudan.

With a focus on multicultural figurative paintings, SAINT JAMES also creates vibrant seascapes and landscapes that capture the essence of countries all over the world and even a series on butterflies.

SAINT JAMES’ artwork has been described as “ebullient”, “bold”, “she creates paintings that remind one of Matisse cutouts in their clear line and intense color” and “joyful”. “SAINT JAMES’ paintings have a healing power that soothes and comforts our souls.”
